Archive for June, 2014

The sun was shining, the crowds were all enjoying themselves! Why? Because it was ‘Midsummer Madness’ at the Leon Recreation Ground on Sunday, July 22nd;  it just could not have been a better day!

The gaily decorated sideshows and stalls all brought a touch of magic. Stallholders had been busily setting up their displays from 10.30 am around the main arena where activities went on throughout the afternoon.

On the Bletchley Community Heritage display we were delighted to meet old friends as well as new ones. It really is great that an event can bring together the community, hopefully all those who enjoyed themselves will bring their friends along next year!

Many thanks to the Bletchley and Fenny Stratford Council for all their hard work on the day!

There’s lots more going on too so try to get there and support this local community event.

Our current display at Bletchley Library is loosely connected with the World Cup.

We may not have a Messi or a Sterling but we celebrate grass roots football with a look back at the sport in Bletchley and North Bucks during the past 100 years. Featuring some of the panels created for the launch of our book on the history of football in Milton Keynes, our display should bring back memories for all those involved.

Anybody recognize this group of puppeteers, dated 1952? I do believe they may have come from the Bletchley Road Schools because some of their faces seem slightly familiar.

Proudly displaying their puppets!

If there were any memorable events at school when you were there, please let us know and we will try and find a photograph taken at the time so you may relive the moment!

Midsummer Madness Sunday 22nd June 2014 in Leon Rec.

This event reminds some of us of the Bletchley Carnivals of years gone by. For instance in 1969 the Carnival Parade through the town to Manor Fields, was watched by thousands of people lining the entire route. The floats were then judged and prizes awarded.

Scot Meats Company won the trade section with highland flings to the skirl of Bob Pope’s bagpipes. On the back of their float was a Loch Ness monster, chewing a string of Scot sausages.

The Royal Naval association won the voluntary section with a colourful effort showing sailing through the ages from the times of Nelson.

To see this year’s activities come to Midsummer Madness in the Leon Rec. will include various craft stalls, activities for the children, and much more.
