Victoria Road!

This old photograph of Victoria Road must have been taken approximately 100 years ago. The real giveaway of course are the soldiers from the First World War posing for the camera. It would be interesting to stand in more or less the same location now as the camera-man must have stood all those years ago, the reason I say this is because the houses pictured I imagine have changed very little over the passage of time.P053 Victoria Road

The little girl with the hoop is standing on the corner of Western Road, George Street is way past the soldiers to the left.

Long before Milton Keynes ‘lovely theatre’ arrived on the scene many local amateur dramatic societies used to perform in the area. I was ‘backstage’ with the Bletchley Amateur Operatic Society and during the year used to help make scenery for the shows under the direction of Ken Branchette, the stage manager, culminating in the weeks performance at the Wilton Hall, Bletchley. As well as backstage of course there was a lively cast performing on stage, who during the winter months used to rehearse at the George Street, Community Centre, under the direction of Ray Holdom, the musical director.

Perhaps there are some of you out there who enjoyed the shows, we would love to hear from you; or maybe you even performed in one!

A lovely old sepia photograph of Bletchley’s past. The small girl in the foreground confidently poses for the camera, a little different from today’s Queensway where you most certainly have to watch the traffic, especially on school days!

Unfortunately, we do not have any date for this photograph of the Fenny Stratford crossroads, possibly somebody can help us with this. Taking a guess I would imagine it may possibly be around the early 1920s. Whatever, the local constabulary seem to be taking great interest in the photographer, as do some of the local residents!

You can of course see The Swan Hotel on the right-hand side with Durran’s shop to the left.

ESS P018 Bletchley Village 1906

These two photographs taken from more or less the same location in the Buckingham Road. The top one is dated 1906 and looks down the hill towards Trees Square and the crossroads; the second taken in 1911 looks up the hill in the direction of Buckingham. Does anybody know the name of the farm?
