Narrow Boats in Fenny Stratford Lock

The photo shows a pair of working boats (known as barge and butty). The boats carried bulk materials such as coal, flour etc. When I was a boy my mother used to take me to see some friends, Mr and Mrs Smith who lived in a cottage at Fenny Lock. She knew a lot of the ‘bargees.’

Now, there are not many working boats, they have been converted to pleasure boats, which are hired out for holidays, or privately owned.

In a survey of Bletchley’s hospital patients, two thirds go to Aylesbury group and one third to Northampton group. Also to the former go practically all Bletchley’s aged and chronic sick, and most of the maternity cases.

Shown above is Bletchley’s new telephone exchange in Victoria Road being opened, it cost £130,000, and was opened by Counsellor E. R. Staniford. Also in the picture are Mrs. A.E. Staniford, and Mrs J.R. Elmer who were the two original ‘hello girls’ in 1905.

This photo shows Tattenhoe church which before the building of Milton Keynes was almost surrounded by trees, and rarely used. It is now surrounded by houses and holds a service every week.
